How Much Space Does Your Office Really Need?

A simple way to think about desks, circulation, collaboration areas and the space your team actually needs.

Office planning is not simply about counting desks. A successful workspace needs enough room for people to work, move, meet and store what they need.

The right amount of space depends on how the team works and how much of the office is dedicated to individual versus shared activities.

Start with the number of people

The number of users gives you the first reference point, but it should not be the only one. Hybrid teams, shared desks and flexible working can significantly change the amount of space required.

Leave room for movement

Desks need breathing room around them. People should be able to move between workstations, storage and shared areas without creating bottlenecks.

Plan collaboration separately

If your team regularly meets, brainstorms or works together, those activities deserve dedicated space rather than happening between desks.

A slightly smaller number of well-planned workstations can often create a better overall workspace than trying to maximise desk count.
